This special series on “Revision Total Hip Arthroplasty” is edited by Dr. Nemandra A Sandiford (Consultant, Joint Reconstruction Unit, Southland Teaching Hospital, Southern District Health Board, Invercargill, New Zealand) and Dr. Daniel Kendoff (Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Helios ENDO-Klinik, Hamburg, Germany).

Nemandra A Sandiford

Mr. Sandiford is a consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma surgeon based at the Joint Reconstruction Unit, Southland Hospital and a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Otago, New Zealand.

He specialises in primary and revision hip and knee reconstruction and prosthetic joint infection(PJI). He has published internationally in these fields.

He qualified from the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, Barbados in 2000. His basic training in Orthopaedics and Hip and Knee reconstruction was obtained in London, UK. This started under the mentorship of Ms. Sarah Muirhead- Allwood. He then undertook specialist training at Guys and St Thomas’ Hospital, London followed by fellowship training in Vancouver, Exeter, Nijmegen and London.

He was a consultant surgeon at Guys and St Thomas’ Hospital and St Georges Hospitals in London, UK prior to moving to New Zealand.

He was awarded a Current Concepts in Joint Replacement Fellowship in 2014, a British Hip Society Travelling Fellowship in 2016 and the prestigious American British Canadian (ABC) Travelling Fellowship in 2018.

Mr. Sandiford’s clinical and research interests have focused around hip and knee prosthesis design, Prosthetic Joint Infection and medical education. He has published widely on implant design, surgical techniques, clinical outcomes and returns to function and sporting activity after joint replacement surgery.

He was also awarded a Master degree with Merit in Sports and Exercise Medicine from the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff and was recently awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Sport and Exercise Physicians of Ireland.

Daniel Kendoff

Prof. Dr. Daniel Kendoff, currently works as clinical director of the orthopaedic and trauma department at Helios Klinikum Berlin Buch. He is also the director of the newly opened ENDO Klinik Berlin since 2022. Previously he was in attending position of orthopaedic total joint reconstructions at Helios Endo Klinik, Hamburg in Germany for 6 years after he fulfilled a previous total joint fellowship at Endo Klinik and a fellowship at Hospital for Special Surgery, New York. After finishing his residency in the orthopedic trauma Department at Hannover, Germany and various sub-internships in at NYU, Baylor College, and HSS, he started his fellowship at Special Surgery in 2007. His clinical focus is completely total knee and hip replacement, including all revisions. Besides his clinical work, he became the director of research at Endo Klinik in 2010. He has currently published more than 190 peer reviewed articles, written32 own books, 9 book chapters and gained his "venia legendi" for full professorship in 2012. The International Society of CAS (CAOS International) elected him as the fellow of 2006-7. His research included clinical as well a numerous basic science studies in the field of orthopedics, trauma and reconstructive surgery. He has been an active instructor of the AO, OTA, AAOS, ORS and given lectures as example the USA, China, Central Amerika, India, China, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, all over Europe and Germany.
