Inflammation of the tibiofemoral joint: inflammatory mediators, treatment, and long-term effects

I am pleased to highlight the topic of “Inflammation of the Tibiofemoral Joint: Inflammatory Mediators, Treatment, and Long-Term Effects” in Annals of Joint (AOJ). Inflammation within the tibiofemoral joint presents a complex challenge in orthopedics, particularly in the context of inflammatory mediators and development of post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA). The primary goal of this series was threefold: to elucidate common inflammatory mediators in knee joint inflammation, to assess the impact of anti-inflammatory treatments on markers of inflammation, and to evaluate the ramifications of such treatments on tissue healing in knee joint pathologies.

Collectively, this series aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the intricate interplay between inflammation, treatment modalities, and long-term tissue healing outcomes in tibiofemoral joint pathologies. By shedding light on these crucial aspects, this series may contribute to preventive strategies in managing PTOA and change current clinical practice regimens for treating knee joint inflammation using existing non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Our expert contributing authors shed light on the controversy of the use of different NSAIDs in the post-surgical setting and their impact on healing of soft tissue and bone.
