Past, present, and future: comprehensive guide to anterior hip arthroplasty

The total hip arthroplasty has been lauded as one of the most successful surgeries of the 20^th century. In 1962, Sir John Charnley, unveiled the Charnley hip replacement which became practical reality and the standard of hip replacement. The total hip replacement has helped patients with even the most severe arthrosis, walk again. Over the last three decades, there have been many great improvements and advancements as total hip arthroplasty continues to evolve. Advancements in technology and refined surgical techniques have allowed surgeons to perform the procedure in more efficient manner with improved outcomes. The longevity of total hip replacements continues to improve as a result of these improvements. One recent advancement is the direct anterior hip replacement allowing surgeons a muscle-sparing approach to the hip joint. This issue is dedicated to the direct anterior total hip arthroplasty. I would like to thank all the contributors for their time and efforts in producing such high-quality review articles. Furthermore, I would like to thank Rose Johnson, research manager of Colorado Joint Replacement, for her dedication and ever-lasting efforts.
