September 13—“Dr. Freddie Fu Day” in the city of Pittsburgh

The Council of the City of Pittsburgh declared September 13 as “Dr. Freddie Fu Day” in the city of Pittsburgh to praise Freddie H. Fu’s outstanding medical achievements (Figure 1).

Dr. Fu (Figure 2), born and raised in Hong Kong, has been devoting himself to medical work at the University of Pittsburgh since 1982. He is the David Silver Professor and chairman of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. In 2010, Prof. Fu was rated the “Distinguished Service Professor” and became the eighth professor in the history of University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, as well as the first Chinese-American scientist that gains this honor. This is the highest honour that a senior professor can gain from the University.

Dr. Fu plays active roles in many medical organizations and associations, such as Rehabilitation Association, American Society of Plastic Surgeon and Orthopedic Research and Education Foundation, etc. He is the former president of the Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Society and was elected as the president of American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) in 2008, becoming the first foreign-born president in the 40-year history of AOSSM. In 2009, Prof. Fu was appointed as the president of International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopedic Sports Medicine, the “United Nations of Sports Medicine” with a membership of 4,000 doctors from 96 countries. In 2011, Dr. Fu received the Diversity Award of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), which earn him international recognition for his contribution in Orthopedics. He is the ninth recipient of the Diversity Award as well as the first Chinese American.

Dr. Fu focuses on clinical outcomes following sports-related injuries, as well as orthopaedic bioengineering. He has pioneered many arthroscopic surgical techniques to cure injuries of knee and shoulder. Also he has done extensive research in the field of biomechanics, kinesiology, comparative anatomy, vivo kinematics, and stem-cell and regenerative medicine involving the knee.

By now, Dr. Fu has published 424 peer-reviewed articles and 29 kinds of text books related to the treatment for orthopaedic sports injury, and has taken part in the edition work in 114 books. In June 2016, Dr. Fu together with Prof. Qing Jiang from Drum Tower Hospital and Prof. Shiro Ikegawa from RIKEN center, established an English medical journal Annals of Joint (AOJ).
